Mr. Vanguard's Space Show

Mr. Vanguard is your guide to the world that begins where our atmosphere ends.

Mr. Vanguard's Space Show is a regular slot bringing short curiosities from astronautics, astronomy and space research. Each episode focuses on a single topic — a current launch, a historical anniversary or an interesting fact from space exploration.

Vanguard 1 satellite is the oldest man-made object still orbiting Earth. Launched on 17 March 1958 from Cape Canaveral, the size of a grapefruit and weighing just under 1.5 kilograms, it was historically the first satellite powered by solar cells. Its estimated end of orbital life is around the year 2240.

In those years, it accomplished quite a lot. Precise tracking of its orbit revealed that Earth is not a perfect spheroid. The equatorial regions are slightly raised and the southern hemisphere is marginally more "bulging". Simply put: Earth is shaped like a pear. A discovery that fundamentally influenced modern geodesy and the development of navigation systems. All thanks to a sphere just sixteen centimetres in diameter.

Scientists are currently considering returning Vanguard 1 to Earth as a physical artefact from the dawn of the space age. For now, however, this bard continues to fly, completing a full orbit of the globe every 134 minutes. Vanguard is a symbol of the fact that great things begin with small, courageous steps. And that some things last longer than anyone expected.
