Neil Druckmann has confirmed that neither he nor Naughty Dog has any creative influence on the final season of The Last of Us
The final chapter of the television adaptation of The Last of Us is being made without the people who originally came up with the story of Ellie and Joel. Neil Druckmann, co-creator of the HBO series and writer and director of both games, confirmed in an interview with The Washington Post that neither he nor the studio Naughty Dog is creatively involved in shaping the third season. The series thus remains fully in the hands of showrunner Craig Mazin.
The interview was part of a broader discussion about writing video games. In it, Druckmann said that he had no influence on the creative direction of the new season and that the studio itself had no creative role either. That is why, he says, he cannot even comment on how filming is progressing. At the same time he pointed out that Naughty Dog, as the creator of the games, remains the steward of the whole brand, even if this may be the end of this adaptation.
“I wasn't involved in shaping this season's creative direction,” says Neil Druckmann.
A departure announced last year
Druckmann announced his departure from the series in July 2025, after the second season was completed and before work on the third began. As the reason, he said he wanted to focus fully on Naughty Dog, on his role as head of the studio and on the new game Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, which he is writing and directing. Writers Halley Gross, co-writer of the game The Last of Us Part II, and Bo Shim left with him. Mazin thus remained the sole showrunner, and Ryan James and Alexandra Cheng joined him in the writers' room.
“I've made the difficult decision to step away from my creative involvement,” Druckmann wrote last year on Naughty Dog's Instagram account.
HBO chief Casey Bloys commented on the departure in conciliatory terms at the time. According to him, Druckmann has his hands full running the studio and developing games, he left the series a good foundation, and Mazin is an experienced professional. “I'm not worried at all,” Bloys added to Variety.
The finale in season three
Back in 2025 it was not clear whether the rest of the second game's story would fit into one season or be split into two. In January this year, Bloys admitted to Deadline that the third season would most likely be the last, but left the final word to the creators. In March he added that this was exactly how Mazin was thinking, even though HBO was leaving the door ajar. In the meantime, Mazin is preparing another game adaptation for HBO, Baldur's Gate, which he will throw himself into fully only after The Last of Us is finished.
Abby's story
Season two ended in a theatre in Seattle, where Abby points a gun at Ellie, the picture cuts to black and a shot rings out. The final shot then jumps back to the first day in Seattle, this time from Abby's point of view. Season three picks up from there and shifts the focus to Abby, played by Kaitlyn Dever. Ahead are her relationships with Yara and Lev and the conflict between the WLF militia and the religious community of the Seraphites. Returning are Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Isabela Merced as Dina, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, Young Mazino as Jesse and Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, with Peter Sarsgaard newly added as Amon, one of the leaders of the Seraphites. No one has yet confirmed the return of Pedro Pascal as Joel.
Filming and premiere
Filming began in March in British Columbia, Canada, and will run until November. In June the crew paused work as part of a planned break for the football World Cup, but according to available information this did not jeopardise the schedule. The premiere is planned for 2027; HBO has not yet announced an exact date.
Fans grew uneasy
Some fans received the news with concern. The second season, aired in spring 2025, divided the audience, and many criticised Mazin's script mainly for the changes to Ellie's character. The audience score on Rotten Tomatoes fell from 86% for the first season to 37% for the second. There are no reports of a rift between Druckmann and Mazin, but the American Forbes points out that it is at the very least odd when the author of the source material has no insight into one of HBO's most important series, built on his studio's flagship brand. Whether the third season will be bolder without the game creators' oversight, or will drift further from the source than fans would like, only 2027 will tell.
Naughty Dog is not finished
The good news for gamers is that Druckmann hinted at a continuation of the game series. According to him, the studio has several projects in the works that he will be happy to talk about when the time is right. Whether it is a third instalment of the game or an entirely different format is not yet clear. “We're not done with The Last of Us,” Neil Druckmann promises.
