This week the show looked at cinema releases such as the Korean sci-fi horror Hope with Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, and the biographical dramedy Tony about a young Anthony Bourdain with Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas. Cinemas also welcomed Practical Magic 2 with Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman and the French thriller Gourou with Pierre Niney. On Netflix we watched the film comeback of the ASK agency Dix pour cent with Camille Cottin and George Clooney, the fifth season of the Israeli series Fauda, and the documentary Untold Mr. T: I Pity the Fool. Apple TV+ brought the thriller Last Seen with Patrick Brammall and Maxine Peake, Disney+ continues with a second season of the Korean crime series Made in Korea and SkyShowtime has launched the second season of the Polish crime series Pionek. On YouTube you will find the documentary Yanuni from the Oscar shortlist, newly available for free on the channel of Leonardo DiCaprio, and the Criterion Collection has released the classic 12 Angry Men by Sidney Lumet with Henry Fonda and Jiří Voskovec in a new 4K edition.

A dramatic story originally shot as a television film, which shaped its form, seemingly at odds with film practice, since the whole of it takes place over ninety minutes in a closed courtroom. Twelve jurors have to decide unanimously on the guilt or innocence of a young man accused of murdering his father. The jurors are average Americans with ordinary interests and jobs. In the running vote eleven of them vote guilty, only juror number 8, the architect Davis, is against. He raises serious objections to the course of the trial and also criticises the way the whole case was investigated.
The screenplay does not put the emphasis on whether the defendant is guilty or not, it is rather an authorial reflection on the possibilities of defending one's opinions, on doubt in the courtroom, on responsibility for one's own words. In this sense the film reaches far beyond its own plot and becomes a generalised picture of a hurried civilisation. The production team created unusual dramatic tension within limited spatial dimensions and masterfully revealed the mental processes of the individual participants in the deliberations of the jury, where the smallest detail takes on the value of a symbol. The careful compositions of Lumet and the strong emphasis on every line are almost perfect. An outstanding screenplay, high professionalism of execution and perfectly differentiated acting performances of the individual characters have contributed to the high and lasting value of this unusual work. It is worth mentioning that juror number 11 was played by Jiří Voskovec. The film was nominated for an Oscar in 1957.
The new 4K UHD + Blu-ray edition brings a 4K digital restoration with the picture in Dolby Vision HDR and uncompressed mono sound. The bonus features include the original television version of 12 Angry Men from 1954 directed by Franklin J.
